Costs The single most expensive component of flight training is the aircraft itself. Because the amount of flying required varies from student to student, a fixed quotation is not possible. Many schools quote on the legal minimum requirement of 45 hours. However, this minimum requirement was derived in much simpler times, when both the aircraft and the airspace were much simpler. Today, especially given an average part-time student's schedule and commitments, 55 hours is probably a better average. We suggest you budget for 55 hours from the start and use this figure as a basis for comparing quotations from different flying schools. The rate for ab initio training on the Tecnam P92S is R 850/h. The Jabiru SP costs R 735/h. These rates include the instructor, the aircraft itself and the fuel. If you want to do a Private Pilot Licence from scratch, you should budget about R 5000 for books, a medical certificate, licence fees and other assorted expenses. Even for advanced training, a considerable portion of the training can be done on a small trainer and on a simulator. The advanced training rate for the Tecnam P92S is R 870/h, with the Jabiru SP rate being R 750/h. For someone working towards a Commercial Pilot Licence, the savings could be at least R 50 000. Even on a Night Rating, you can expect to save over R 2000. Incidentally, on night ratings you must be even more careful when comparing quotations. Several flight schools quote on "night ratings" that do not comply with the minimum legal requirements, not to mention the requirements of the real world! The excessive use of simulators is not appropriate for this phase of your flight training, and at least five hours of your instrument training must be done in a real aircraft. We offer bulk discounts, making the experience even more affordable. If you pre-pay under certain conditions, you can obtain a discount of 5% on all your flying. Licenced and approved pilots can hire a Tecnam P92 at R 670/h or a Jabiru SP at R 590/h. Rates quoted include VAT at 14% and fuel, but exclude landing fees at airports other than Kitty Hawk. |
